    1. Second readSometimes you must read a book the second time to truly grasp the meaning of the story. I'm so thankful I have this one on my shelf!First readI could read this again in a heartbeat. Anne Mateer wrote this beauitfully, sweeping me into the story from the first page and kept my interest all the way to the end. The book starts in 1918, toward the end of the Great War. Rebekah Hendricks is seeking a life of adventure and she believes she will find it in dashing Arthur. When she travels to [...]

    2. It's a joy to find a novel set during WWI. In Wings of a Dream, main character Rebekah yearns to leave her small town in Oklahoma to see the world. Mix in a match making mother and a young man with the same vision as Rebekah and it is easy to see her point of view.As life so often does, Rebekah's journey takes her down a new path. The novel is largely about her figuring out what she truly desires in life.I loved the historical details in the novel such as horse and buggy sharing roads with autom [...]

    3. This book was like a scrumptiously perfect mini cheesecake--the right size, sweet but substantial, and utterly happy-creating. :D A very sweet friend sent it to me for Christmas, and I read it in a day. ;)I’m not sure I’ve cared so much about fictional characters in a while. They really shone in this book! Rebekah was an interesting heroine, and while I couldn’t relate to her dreams, I did relate to her struggle in turning them over to God. This book did a good job of portraying just how f [...]

    4. Set during a time period I know a lot about, this story delighted me with it's historical aspects of the end of WWI. The writing style was easy to read, yet well done. And having the main character share a name with me (same spelling even) was quite fun. I found myself understanding Rebekah, and though some people may have a problem with some thoughts/questions that were repeated over and over, it is exactly how my mind works. The children, Ollie, James, Dan, and Janie were so sweet! They starte [...]

    5. I checked out this book from our library because I had heard a lot of good things about the author, but at first glance I didn't think it would be quite my style. Well. . .I was wrong! I was expecting a light, simple book, but what I got was a book with an interesting plot, unique and relatable characters, and a very strong spiritual message. However it wasn't preachy or in your face like a number of books I have read, which made it all the more enjoyable. And of course, the time period that it [...]

    6. That was awesome! I loved the whole book. I was a little uncertain about the love aspect about it, thinking it would be horrible predictable, but without giving spoilers, it was awesome. I was very pleased with the outcome. I loved how light the romance was to.There were two mildly awkward scenes in this book, but they were very well handled and realistic without being crude. I can't wait to read more by this author!

    7. I cringe to think I was *this* close to not requesting “Wings of a Dream” to review. When I closed the cover on this book last night, after staying up nearly two hours past my bedtime on a Sunday night, I couldn’t have been more thankful for one of the best finds I’ve had this year in Christian fiction.Several things I loved about this book right off: it’s a historical, first person novel and the heroine is one I love to read about. She’s strong and faces each instance head on, but i [...]

    8. I will honestly say that I had planned to rate this novel a two, I just couldn't seem to get into the novel; however, the ending won me over and made me enjoy this piece. The book was well written, it is rare to find this level of intelligence found within this time frame. From beginning to end, there was not a anything out of place. The characters were well developed, with thorough story lines for each. There was not a person that was not needed or some way tied back into the overall story. My [...]

    9. I really enjoy Anne Mateer' writing style. The characters are loving and kind yet have real life struggles. The setting flows so well. The time period takes you back to a simpler time and place. That's what I love about reading fiction!

    10. I 'met' the author on Twitter a few months ago and decided I should read one of her books, just to see if she was any good (smile), you know? Some day, I hope, you will be able to say the same of me. I was a little nervous, although this is the second author to go through this process under my scrutiny (another smile). I'm pretty sure God knows what He is doing when He sets these meetings up (smile).I loved the book! and I choose not to go into detail about the story. You can read the synopsis, [...]

    11. Masterful debut. I loved that it was in first person POV, which is not common for historical novels, but the style worked very well. Wings of a Dream totally captured my heart. I loved how the author took what was essentially a self-centered young woman and matured her through a variety of painful circumstances over which she had no control. I felt bad for Rebekah because she wanted to do the right thing, but she was afraid of being passed over entirely if she said no, so she struggled with it. [...]

    12. Reading "Wings of a Dream" I felt like I stepped back into 1918 each time I opened the pages! The story was so vivid and the characters were so real! I felt that I experienced all the emotions that Rebekah did as she tried to discern the Lords will for her life and discovered her need to surrender her dreams and plans completely to Him. "Sometimes you have to give up everything in order to gain what the Lord wants you to have." Rebekah was a heroine so many of us can relate to. I really enjoyed [...]

    13. 5 Stars13+ for mild romance.Where can I start? This was another wonderful read by Anne Mateer! Sweet, simple in its style (one won't get overwhelmed by a plethora of subplots or POV changes), and historical, I really enjoyed the tale of a young woman in search of adventure. She longs for new scenery and fun, but her Providential quest away from her rigid home leads her to discover far more. She learns the true meaning of life, love, and the secret places of her heart. The plot was great. Just eno [...]

    14. This is my first read by Anne Mateer but it won't be my last. The story line was very well done, the historical research spot on, and the characters felt like every day small town neighbors with all their strengths, weaknesses, tragedies, and triumphs. I really identified with the main character Rebekah as she sought what her life's path should be and wished for adventure and something different in her future. But as she learns to lean on God's directions for her life, she finds that sometimes w [...]

    15. Every great once in a while, I read a book that speaks so clearly into my life, it was like it was written for me for just this time. This is one of those books. While I am not dealing with death or suitors or taking care of someone else's kids, I can relate to Bekah's uncertainty with the future - having plans and dreams and wondering why some things happen yet others, no matter how strongly desired and prayed for, do not. I can certainly relate to Bekah's "What, Lord? What do you want me to do [...]

    16. I read in the ‘About the Author’ section of this book that Anne has actually written five novels and finally got a contract for Wings of a Dream. I am so glad that Bethany House recognized the talent that Anne has been working on all these years. Even though Wings of a Dream is not technically Anne’s “debut novel”, I could tell that this story really had her heart in it. The Lord used her to show the reader that when we earnest seek God’s will for our lives, he will show us the way. [...]

    17. Wings of a Dream by Anne Mateeranother wonderful story and great characters from this author, love to read her stories.Rebekah Hendricks has dreamed for a long time of leaving the farm and having exciting things like flying happen. when she meets Arthur and he seems to be the man that will give her a different type life she falls in love quickly. Arthur goes to war with the promise to return and she waits faithfully expecting his return and their marriage.Life never seems to go just as we expect [...]

    18. What I LovedI'm staring at my copy of the book right now, trying to narrow down exactly what it was that I loved many things to choose from! I love how Rebekah grows. She seemed to me to be a little shallow at the beginning of the novel, but she travels states to care for the children her aunt was responsible for. And she falls in love with the children. I love the children. They were each unique with true-to-childhood voices. I've read books where the children seemed stilted. Wings of a Dream i [...]

    19. After finishing Playing by Heart, I was excited to read this book by Anne Mateer! I must say that it was a delightful story. At the beginning of it, I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy it, but as the story began to unfold, I found myself really loving it.I loved Rebekah's sweet heart as she knew she should stay with these children whose mother had just passed away and their father was in the army. Even at hard times when she wanted to go home or other places, she stayed and honored her p [...]

    20. Wings of a Dream was just as good as I had hoped. After reading Anne Mateer's newest novel, Playing By Heart, I was very excited to pick up this story (which is her debut novel) and I loved it!!The story was fantastic and even heartbreaking at times. I really felt for the characters and especially the kids. There was a little bit of a love triangle (square?) -- because you didn't know who of the three guys Rebekah would end up with (if any). While I wasn't a huge fan of that aspect, I did think [...]

    21. It always pains me when I come across a book that others really enjoyed and I didn't. It's even worse when it's a brand new author. Each book is like a new baby to an author, and I imagine new authors are doubly sensitive when they read reviews of their "firstborn." But unfortunately, Wings of a Dream just wasn't my cup of tea. There's not one clear area that I can point to as to where this book went wrong for me. I could name several things that didn't appeal to me, but I really don't want to ge [...]

    22. Rebekah would love to follow her love Arthur to the training camp near Texas and when she learns her Aunt Adabelle is sick with the fever she is amazed her parents are willing to let her go take care of her. Rebekah arrives just in time before he aunt passes away. She learns she will be taking care of 3 children while their father is off at war. All she wants if for Arthur to come get her or go see him. When she does finally take the chance to see him she learns he is engaged. Rebekah feels upse [...]

    23. In Wings of a Dream, Rebekah Hendricks, a small-town Oklahoma girl, dreams of an adventurous life . . . and escaping from her controlling mother. When she’s called to Texas to care for an ailing aunt, she’s certain that God has granted her desire and that adventure is just around the corner. Set at the end of WWI against the backdrop of the Spanish flu epidemic, debut author Anne Mateer, gently guides the reader through one surprising twist after another. It reminded me of the old adage to b [...]

    24. Again, I would give this book five stars for presentation but personally, a few less stars, mainly because of the romance element. I wouldn't recommend it for younger readers because of that and semi-involved details concerning the Spanish flu epidemic.I was intrigued by the situation Rebekah was thrown into--and discovering her answers with her. Rebekah's first prayers all centered on self, however the reader is drawn to her journey. Will she come to the end of herself and surrender her will, d [...]

    25. I had the privilege of seeing this book move through the stages of editing, and each time the book grew stronger and more beautiful. If you're a lover of historical fiction and you enjoy a good, honest love story, you won't be disappointed in this sweet, coming of age novel about spunky Rebekah Handricks and her dream to soar above the circumstances of her life. She, like many of us, experiences a strange rearrangement of her circumstances and expectations, and must learn how to grow up in the m [...]

    26. It took me about halfway through to really get into this story but once I did, I couldn't stop. The main character, Rebecca is a bit selfish and self centered at certain parts but she is 19 years old so I let a lot of it pass because who isn't selfish at that age? I did like the book a whole lot better (view spoiler)[ once the dad came back from the war and she started falling for him (hide spoiler)]. The four kids were cute though. I like how they weren't perfect and sometimes they annoyed and [...]

    27. A book for girls. Totally, not my kind of read, even though it is very well written. I skimmed it in under an hour.Like what you read? Visit me at my blog

    28. What an emotional book! Rebekah grows up really fast when asked to care for her dying aunt. She finds herself caring for more than her aunt. Though it takes her four months before she finally hears the Lords words, they could not have came at a better time.

    29. Wonderful!Enjoyed everything about this book: the characters, the style, the heartfelt emotions. Read it in one sitting it was that good! Will read more of her writings!
