    1. No hesitation - five stars! This was an incredible and deeply informative read. I have read a number of books which purport to lift the lid on life within the former DDR. The vast majority have sought either to glamourise the "victory" of Capitalism over State Socialism, or have such a narrow area of focus, invariably on the negative) as to make them almost pathological in their approach and narrative. This book differs from the above and seeks to provide a broad brush assessment of the DDR writ [...]

    2. Very refreshing read for someone who wanted to read about daily life in DDR apart from the usual anticommunist bashing. It focuses on achievements of the east german society and it's positive aspects in order to give more balanced perspective of the ordinary life.

    3. An excellent read, it cuts through all the lies and propaganda that have been thrown at the GDR since its demise. It is well worth reading and I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about life in the GDR.

They clearly illustrate how the dice were loaded against the DDR from the start, the forces from both East and West that put a brake on d [...]

    5. Loved this. An insightful peer into the workings of East Germany by a documentary film-maker who lived there revealing how much of what we in 'the West' have been told about this place at that time was only half the story. A great read for students of modern history or simply those who want to know more about this secretive but surprisingly progressive state.
