    1. While I noted in my journal that this was OK but not great, it sticks in my brain for some reason. Perhaps living in New England in an area where mills were a major part of the economy early on gave the book an innate appeal. It felt like there should have been earlier books since the text refers to other cases Josiah has undertaken. I also found the clues to 'who dunnit' fairly obvious. The period flavor was pretty good but I was brought up short when he describes Thanksgiving as a Thursday hol [...]

    2. High expectations for this, but they were not met. Set in New Hampshire in the fall of 1836 where Josiah Beede has chosen to retire to after fighting in the War of 1812, becoming a ward of Andy Jackson, reading for the law, and serving in Jackson's administrations. Beede is trying to deal with a wife who died during an unsatisfactory marriage. Jason Beede is a strange character who finds it difficult to walk his own talk which creates confusion for himself as well as the reader. This potentially [...]

    3. As a life-time New Englander who has lived around old farmhouses and mill towns all her life without fully being able to envision life within them, Mr. Linsley brought new insight into the history and daily life of the area in the early 1800's within a really entertaining mystery. I loved the main character, Josiah Beede. He was a hero while still being an average guy, and the book ends with me wanting to know more and read the next in teh series, "Saving Louisa."A quick read, but a good one!

    4. murder mystery , and I knew who the killer was on page 36, should have stopped reading the book right then and there. a wasted 8 hours of reading. will not remember a thing about the book tomorrow morning. I think this is three books in a row that I have not liked.
