    1. Joan Brown is probably one of the most well-known of the so-called San Francisco figurative artists. My favorite paintings are "Christmas Time 1970," a self-portrait with her son, Noel, wherein the artist poses with her vocational painter's gloves while her adolescent son clings to a Teddy Bear. Quite moving! I also appreciate her "swimming" series, especially those depicting her Alcatraz bay swims (Joan Brown was one of the first women allowed to join the historic Dolphin Club in San Francisco) [...]

    2. Hadn't heard of her before this book. Impressive, for all the changes if nothing else. (Of course I ignored the text.)
