    1. Bu mektupları okumadan önce Hermann Hesse'nin birkaç kitabını okumuş ancak Thomas Mann'ın hiçbir kitabını okumamıştım. Şunu söyleyebilirim ki kitaplarını okuduğum Herman Hesse'nin mektupları daha tanıdık daha sıcak geldi. Kitapta yer alan mektuplar 1910 yılından Thomas Mann'ın öldüğü 1955 yılına kadar devam etmekte.
