    1 thought on “Double Crossing

    1. There was a time, long, long ago, when I would devour historicals like candy. Then I got bored. Probably because it felt like I had read damned near every plot imaginable. So to say that I was surprised at how quickly I got sucked into this one is an understatement. This one is like taking all the best things about a former love, combining it with all the best things about a new love and then adding a dash of adventure and intrigue. Don't be fooled - this is not your standard historical.Lily has [...]

    2. "Double Crossing" is an excellent historical tale featuring murder, betrayal, and romance that spans across the United States. Lily's father is murdered but it's been arranged to look like a suicide. While dealing with the memorial arrangements, Lily's estranged and disowned aunt, Lady Sylvia and her husband, Sir Vaughn decide to make this event their homecoming. Certain that the man she thinks murdered her father has stolen the deed to the mine owned by her father and her uncle, Lily, and her w [...]

    3. Fast paced and thrilling to read. The history angle is so well developed and researched that I found myself lost in the train from another century. Even though Lily knew who the killer was there was still so much intrigue from other mysteries that the book kept moving. There were so many smaller added details that made this book leap off the page. A definite page turner as I had to finish it after I started (made for a late night or early morning). The minor characters, from her long lost aunt a [...]

    4. This little novel keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. Great characters, a mystery, and a budding romance--what more could one ask for! Can't wait for Meg's next book to be available!

    5. "Historical Romance And Suspense That Will Leave You Wanting More"A Western historical fiction and romance, mixed with plenty of suspense, murder and adventure, which had me hooked from the first page to the last.Lily is a girl ahead of her time. Unlike many of her contemporaries she is educated in the ways of the world, intelligent, strong willed and self-sufficient. Qualities which have been instilled in her by a father she loves and whose good name she is determined to see restored after his [...]

    6. Author Meg Mims describes her historical Western mystery-adventure, Double Crossing, as a sort of True Grit on a train. It’s an apt description, with a determined heroine, Lily Granville, setting out from Chicago in 1869 to track down her father’s murderer and hiring an unknown tough guy, the Texan Ace Diamond, to help and protect her. The deed for a California quicksilver mine has also gone missing, with neither the killer nor Lily knowing where it is, and presumably the mine’s ownership [...]

    7. Review by April: Vivid historical fiction mixed with murder, suspense and a lovely dash of romance makes Double Crossing by Meg Mims an out of the ballpark hit.I have to admit that for me, Double Crossing is a bit different than the books that I normally read. However, I was curious to give it a try and can honestly say that I would have missed out on an amazing book if I had not! Author Meg Mims delivers a story that is not only amazingly vivid, clear and engrossing, but she takes readers into [...]

    8. Meg loves to tell tell you of her love for True Grit (the original book, the movie in 1969 and the recent version also) and goes on to say how much it influenced her during the writing of Double Crossing. (In as much a lot of the action takes place on a train, I hear whispers of Agatha Christies Murder on the Orient Express._Make no mistake Ms. Mims writing it tight, fast and a historical delight. You’ll find no historical info dump in Double Crossing. Yet you cannot fail to realise how much r [...]

    9. The authorities are convinced Lily Granville’s wealthy father committed suicide; she’s equally convinced he was murdered as part of a scheme to obtain control of a California gold mine. Accompanied by a missionary who intends to overcome her misgivings and marry her, the strong-willed socialite embarks on a cross-country quest to find her uncle and the mine’s missing deed. Deceitful relatives, the late tycoon’s attorney, and a rowdy Texan drifter—along with nearly everyone else Lily me [...]

    10. Trust is a thing that is earned, not given, to those in our lives. Unfortunately, sometimes those who seem closest to us are the ones who will stab us in the back if given the means and opportunity to do so. The idea of trust is put to the test in Meg Mims’ historical fiction mystery novel Double Crossing. Through trials and tribulations the main heroine learns these difficult lessons about trust, as well as the old adage that one should keep their friends close, but their enemies closer.Lily [...]

    11. I love historical fiction and that is one thing that made this book so interesting. The story begins when Lily hands her father a message from her uncle about a mine in California. She distrusts her father’s lawyer, who saved his life in the war. A short time later she hears a shot, sees the lawyer running out of the house and finds her father dead. If that isn’t bad enough her father’s disowned sister shows up and makes life miserable. Lily decides she is headed to California to her uncle [...]

    12. This book completely surprised me. This isn't the kind of novel I would normally pick up. While I do read the occasional mystery, it definitely isn't my favorite genre, and Westerns would really not be my first pick either. But I devoured this novel. It sucks you in and continues to bring the action and suspense that makes you want to keep reading to find out what's going to happen next. Lily is one of the strongest heroines I have read about recently. She's the kind of person that you really en [...]

    13. Set in America during the Gold Rush era, this historical suspense novel is layered with details that sent me back in time. After Lily's father is murdered, her greedy aunt descends to wrest Lily's inheritance away. Lily flees, heading west on the transcontinental railroad in order to escape her aunt and bring her father's killer to justice. Unfortunately Lily is now a target herself. The grasping aunt and her husband manage to tag along to keep an eye on Lily. Of course you know they are up to n [...]

    14. I absolutely loved this book, I felt that I was swept away from the very start. I was constantly trying to figure out who did what and I did figure some of it out but not all of it. The book was packed with action, betrayal, mystery and had a little love mixed in. I really think a lot of men would enjoy this book. When Lilly's father is killed she see's one of the killers which sends her on this wild quest to find all who are involved and bring them to justice. Lilly never realizes that she is th [...]

    15. Double Crossing by Meg MimsMy thoughts on the book Double Crossing by Meg Mims was a very good book.  After the death of Lily Granville's father who she feels was murdered she is sent in to a journey with danger, intrigue, and unbelievable surprises.  Her fathers estranged sister makes a appearance with her husband on the day of his funeral.  Her aunt tries to take over and tell her what to do, but Lily will have nothing to do with it.  She thinks that the man responsible for her fathers dea [...]

    16. Lily Granville grew up in a home with money, taking most of her comforts for granted. Her mother died early and when her father was murdered in order to get a deed to a mine in California, Lily challenged herself to follow the trail of the murderer out West. With a companion male, someone who wants to marry her for her money, she jumps on a train, hardly knowing the dangers she will face or the discomforts. Along the way, she befriends a young woman going to meet a fiancé in Cheyenne, and she h [...]

    17. Double Crossing, by Meg Mims (Astraea Press, 2011, $13.95) introduces Lily Granville, left bereft in 1869 when her father is murdered in cold blood, almost before her eyes. The motive? The deed to a gold mine in California! Lily is sure she knows who the killer is, but she has to catch him first. With this in mind, she heads west on the newly-built Transcontinental Railroad, with her very proper fiance to give her support, her Aunt Sylvia as chaperon, and a bodyguard hired en route for protectio [...]

    19. Disclosure: I'm not the biggest mystery reader. I also know the author. That being said, I found myself quickly pulled into this novel and had trouble putting it down! The plot hits the ground running, and never lets up. I did figure out one of the plot twists ahead of time, but not the others, so the unveiling near the end did surprise. The novel is a fascinating view into the past, as well. We tend to view the past though a glossy lens, but Meg Mims gives it to us straight-up. Little details li [...]

    20. One way to get to know people really well is to ride across the country on a train with them. This book proves that serves for fictional characters as well. Not only does this book have a really terrific plot, the scenario is dropped very neatly into the timeframe of the 1800s and I had no problem imagining myself there. I enjoyed both the historical touches and the characters tremendously, especially the hint of bad boy in the role of Ace, who is a diamond in the rough. If you like trains, myst [...]

    21. What a hang on to your seat read. With greed taking the forefront, Double Crossing will keep you turning the pages. Mystery and suspense along the railroad of yesterday, Ms. Mims paints a picture of what life was like back then from one coast to the other. A dash of romance is peppered in, and this reader is curious to know just what will happen to the strong-willed Lily. Perhaps a sequel is in the works?Matilda Reviewer for Coffee Time Romance & Morecoffeetimeromance/Boo

    22. This book was a thrill to read. A gripping story of adventure and mystery. Ace was a fabulous smoky hero straight out of a movie. Lily is spunky and determined but still ladylike. The various side characters fill in a world of intrigue despite the limitations of travel by train. The romance is sweet and exciting. The adventure keeps you reading until the very end, anxious to see how it all turns out. A wonderful read and one I would recommendeanromancereviews

    23. Just finished this western adventure and I really enjoyed it (thus the 4-star rating). Lily is a spunky, independent-thinking young woman who is trying to find answers in the death of her father. There are some double dealings (and double crossings) and double trouble while Lily searches for the truth. I like the character of Ace but wish he would have been a little more prevalent in the story, I think the ending would have fit a little better. Good start to a new series.

    24. Nice to find a Western written by a woman. And the main character is a woman who is out to avenge her fathers death. She heads out west by train to California to find the deed for the gold mine her father left her. Other people are interested in the mine so she has hired a young drifter, Ace Diamond, to protect her since her life is always at risk. I enjoyed the train ride and also the main character was very determined and ready to defend herself.

    25. This was a enjoyable read, I really liked it. The Heroine was born in a period of time where women were property, but she does not accept this custom very well. It was full of wonderful descriptions and makes me want to travel by train across the country. The author did a wonderful job of capturing the time period and the twisted relationships between all the characters was just plain fun. The surprise at the end was worth the wait. Mrs. Mims has done a wonderful job.

    26. I really enjoyed this story - it's a galloping read based around a feisty heroine trying to avenge the death of her beloved father. It takes the reader across the US in an eventful train journey you don't want to end. Intriguing characters, red herrings and plenty of other authorial devices will keep you guessing right to the end. I Loved It!

    27. Double Crossing is a fantastic read. I've rarely seen an author craft chapter endings with such gripping suspenseful moments that force you to turn the page, breathless to know what is going to happen. The characters are layered and intriguing. I hope there is a sequel because I want to know more about sexy, fascinating Ace Diamond, the honorable Texan gunslinger.

    28. Lily is distressed when her father is murdered and none seem to believe her. She knows she must escape her aunt's control and go to California where her Uncle Harrison lives as he is to be her guardian. Follow Lily's trials as she heads west. This book is one that I did not want to put down as it is exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat! Good Christian historical fiction!!!

    29. Historical fiction is not my usual cup of tea, yet still I really enjoyed Double Crossing. Mostly, I feel it's because of the beautiful descriptions used; I really 'felt and saw' everything going on in the pages of this book. Beautifully written, with characters that really grew on me and a mystery that had me gripped til the very end.
