    1. These three tales follow the likeable Jamie through several stages of his growing up in the eighties and beyond. The author creates an authentic world and manages to conjure up great imagery with few words. At times it’s funny, at others achingly sad, and quite often both. In fact, David nails the combination and I was reminded very much of Alan Bennett’s writing. The stories don’t take long to read but I really felt I’d experienced Jamie’s coming out and I smiled and cringed at the beh [...]

    2. The best writing forces us to look at familiar stories in a new light. Anyone who has grown up gay in a working class family small town Britain will immediately recognise the characters and situations portrayed in Justin David’s Tales of the Suburbs, a triptych of short stories charting Jamie’s coming of age from mid-teens to early adulthood. The redolent flavour of family life is as unmistakeable as the smell of Bisto gravy. The women in particular could have stepped out of a Beryl Cooke ca [...]

    3. This is a very quick read that is three stories about the same person at various times when they are growing up. Basically, they are gay and struggling to come to terms with it as they are ageing. The last story is about when he is about to come out but his family believe he is moving in with a male friend. There is no real tension as you get to know the various members of the family and the things they usually do. It is set sometime in the 80s I believe although my musical history may be wrong! [...]

    4. Three short stories about a boy coming of age in a working class household. Some amusing incidents as family and friends prove embarrassingly honest and forthright.
