    1. 'Alive with an energetic interest in masculine temperaments' Read the rest of my review here:smh/entertainment/b

    2. The Glass Kingdom is the second novel by Irish-born author, Chris Flynn. Working the Target Ball stand in the Kingdom travelling carnival are Mikey and Ben. Mikey fancies himself a hip-hop artist, but until he makes it big, he’s trying to pull the punters with his patter, working on his flow when things are quiet. Ben handles the tweakers, who, after handing over $50 and a cursory throw at the target, are guaranteed a special prize: a fluffy blue koala. And he cools things down when Mikey’s [...]

    3. The Glass Kingdom is about a tenuous working relationship between two sideshow attendants - a scarred ex-soldier and drug lord, and a wannabe rapper - both damaged, desperate (in different ways) and selfish. The characters are slowly revealed through different voices and points of view, and via a series of incidents in regional and rural Australia, places where the 'Kingdom' has landed. Flynn writes addictive prose, wonderfully rhythmic and withholding just enough of the plot so you want to know [...]

    4. I started off liking this book a lot. The voice of Ben is a tough, vernacular one. He's a 'take-no-prisoner's' sort of bloke and even his sidekick Mickey (despite his twisted language) is likeable too.Even though he commits the unforgivable act against his boss. When suddenly and for no apparent reason the voice of Voltan, Master of Electricity, takes over with a different vernacular I lost interest. This was an unforgivable interruption. Then the story is interrupted again with the voice of Mekon [...]

    5. Flynn brings the underbelly of Australia to light. He has great skills in writing in the various narrators voices. The start was great, Voltan slowed me, Mekong Delta had highs and lows. The ending was a bit vague. The "hero" is a damaged ex-soldier who has established a distribution network for meth where he uses a carnival game as the front. He has no fear of physical damage of people who do not obey his orders and seems to gain great pleasure in the damage he is going to his "customers". His b [...]

    6. Clever book. As annoying as Mikey was I really loved the section written from his perspective. So very clever!

    7. I waited forever to get a copy of this book here in the USA, I loved the authors first book A Tiger In Eden, but based on this book he should have retired after the first book. The first hundred pages are great, narrated by Ben who is a meth dealer at a carnival, then for some really bad reason the the narration changes to someone you the reader have not met and you get Ben's background. The rest of the book is narrated by Mekong Mikey the dirtbag who stole from Ben in the beginning of the book. [...]

    8. The language won't be to everyone's liking but it sounds authentic and gives an insight into people living on the fringes of society in regional Australia with drug dealing and mental health issues. Loved the concept of the reality cooking TV show. The rest of the carnival was a little undeveloped, but it did keep the focus on the main characters.I enjoyed the tussle between Ben and Mikey and was curious to see how it would end. Congrats to the author for a satisfying and appropriate ending. It m [...]

    9. I enjoyed the 'bones' of the story, but I wasn't crazy about how it was told. The book is divided into four sections told from the perspective of three different narrators. For some reason, that seemed quite random and arbitrary, and in my opinion, it didn't add depth to the story - in fact, the wanna-be gangsta section, was a bit tiring to read, and served more as a distraction. Nevertheless, learning about the world in which this story took place (meth dealer operating out of a carnival sidesh [...]

    10. One of those books where nothing much actually happens but you want to keep reading anyway. I actually give it three and a half stars for that. As the action takes place in Australia, it occasionally helps to have some basic familiarity with Aussie slang but it won't ruin the experience if you don't. Having about a third of the book written in gangsta English is a wee bit tiring at times but bear with Mikey 'Mekong Delta' Dempsey through it.An enjoyable exercise in language and character buildin [...]

    11. I picked this book up while I was in Melbourne, Australia last month and tore through it. It centres around characters who travel with a carnival around rural Australia. Ben is a war vet, meth dealer, and life-long carnival game operator. Mikie is a rather hapless wannabe hip-hop star with a bit of a big mouth. I developed empathy for the characters, enjoyed the story and the writing, and was glad for a little bit of Aussie lit while I was traveling through Victoria and NSW.

    12. The second novel from Irish born, Australian resident Chris Flynn, THE GLASS KINGDOM is one of those books that you're either going to get, or be horribly confused by. Review in full at Reviewing the Evidence

    13. Good stuff. Only false note was the section narrated by Voltan. It jarred and its only purpose was to convey to the reader Ben's history. Very clumsily done. Spoiled what was otherwise a brilliant little story.

    14. Unlikeable protagonists. Not merely flawed, but just unlikeable low-life types.Occasional flashes of humour and some wonderful use of words at times but no other redeeming feautures.I did finish it but really wish I had moved on to the next book in the pile.
