    1. “He was only supposed to be gone three days.”More than just a romance novel; more than just a mystery novel; more than just what could equally be described as a coming-of-age novel – and not that anything is remotely wrong with these genres – Anna Celeste Burke’s A Foot above Ground poses, via a tragic event, one of the most fundamental questions pertaining to philosophical thought in the 20th/21st century: where do we turn for comfort/consolation in our hour of need, when having turne [...]

    2. "Love a Foot Above the Ground" by Anna Burke is a beautiful story about love, loss and getting past tragedy. Told from a familiar perspective, the protagonist of Burke's crime series, Jessica Huntingdon, it is mainly about the housekeeper and mother figure of Bernadette. Bernadette, a woman who joins the family from Mexico, the woman who loved Guillermo and tragically lost him one day. The story is quite powerful as we get introduced to it from the perspective of a young Jessica, not older than [...]

    3. It’s A Wonderful Life With Love A Foot Above the Ground!A thoroughly cozy and charming read that takes place in Mexico in the 1960s. Told through an unusual perspective, you are drawn and gently guided through this touching story.Rich with a loving families culture and customs, this is an emotional read and doesn’t need fancy fanfare to touch your heart. The story is about a young girl, Bernadette, and her coming of age. How she finds and loses the man she loves. This would be enough to darke [...]

    4. This great novel involves the recounting of the love story of Bernadette and Guillermo, as told to Jessica Huntingdon (of the Jessica Huntingdon Desert Cities Mystery Series) by Bernadette when Jessica, then nine years old, sat spellbound at her feet. The story of the love affair is mainly narrated as if by Bernadette herself in the first person, with alternating sections where the point of view is provided by Jessica with a clever evoking of a nine-year-old's wide-eyed enthusiasm as she listene [...]

    5. Warms the senses!Love a Foot Above the GroundAnna BurkeA really lovely and beautiful creation from Burke exploring life after death - a wonderfully well-written and crated novel."Love a Foot Above the Ground" is a story that warms the senses, takes the reader to a place of 'cozy' but with stimulation in all the right places.A sit-at-home read that many will love to read and read again - the author has encapsulated something special in the pages of this book.Feel the love and the loss with Jessic [...]

    6. I read "Love a Foot Above the Ground" right after having finished "A Dead Sister", from the Jessica Huntington mystery series. Well, I have to say that it was a bit weird to me to see Jessica immersed in a "romance" kind of story rather than a mystery one, yet the book flew well without making me stop reading. The story is basically narrated by Jessica and Bernadette, the real main character, in the '80, however it's set in the '60. It was intriguing for me to come across betrayals, jealousy and [...]

    7. Where do I start on this one? For starters, the title spoke to me so I grabbed it. This is a beautiful love story told to Jessica Huntington by Bernadette the housekeeper about her own life with Guillermo. The story was set in the 1960's, told to Jessica in the 1980's and then crafted into this story. The author did a superb job writing this book. The characters were delightful and I was able to connect immediately, which made the book impossible to put down. If you believe in love, please read [...]

    8. This story was not at all what I expected. That is not a bad thing because it was so much more. Love a Foot Above the Ground contained so many different aspects of life: the importance of family and God; the importance of being a responsible, contributing member of society; love in all its many forms; romance; heartbreak; and resilience of the soul. It was also a history lesson as I learned so much about the culture Bernadette grew up in as well as the culture in CA in the 1960s. My heart breaks [...]

    9. I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. This book is the prequel to the beloved series, Desert Cities mystery booksBernadette is a close family friend, so close she might as well be family. She is a confidant, a loyal friend and companion to Jessica and, she takes it upon herself, as family will, to discipline Jessica when she gets into mischief. Oh, they have a grand times, those two. It is a time of Bernadette telling Jessica stories, at Jessica's instigation. These stories are [...]

    10. Inspiring StoryLove, A Foot Above the Ground by Anna Celeste Burke is an awesome and inspiring book. The author’s writing style flows smoothly, the storyline and characters are well developed. Ms. Burke is very talented in descriptive writing and much of the time that I was reading, I felt like I was there, watching the activities taking place. I found my heart filled with happiness, sadness, and happiness again and my eyes were often filled with tears of joy and sadness. This is a story told [...]

    11. Enchanting story of transcendent love, laced with mystery and exotic settingThe enchantment of this story about the adventures, mysterious fate, and transcendent love an extraordinary young couple lingered long after I finished reading it. Though the heroine tells it simply and humbly, the story is rich in wisdom about family, honor, strength, and determination. Bernadette is full of admiration for her husband, who is as intelligent and spirited as herself: “Guilleromo’s spirit was so strong [...]

    12. All of Anna Celeste Burke books seem to be be available on kindle unlimited, although think at first came across her in one of the Happy Homicides anthologies she is in. Also after reading a freebie or something as well, went and bought every book out, pre-ordered #4 out now and have pre-ordered #5 now. There are blurbs at the start of every book if you want to know about characters, plots and all that. My rating is 5 and 5, everthing else is rather up to the personal tastes of each reader. Below [...]

    13. Love a Foot Above the Ground By Anna BurkeThis is not your typical boy meets girl story. Love a Foot Above the Ground has a strong sense of mystery running through this tale of love that transcends time, space, and even death. The setting in San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez is a beautiful place to fall passionately in love. Our heroine Bernadette may fall in love, but she isn’t stupid. She listens to what her brothers and father have to say about the man who has captured her interest. She knows [...]

    14. Having read and reviewed all 3 of the Huntington Desert Mystery Series by Anna Celeste Burke-I, like many of you wanted to read about a character in all those novels-Bernadette! Bernadette, one of my favorite characters in this series has a book about her as well--it is the prequel to all these books. Everyone should have a Bernadette in their lives especially if you are among the 1% that live in California and are spoiled, rich and totally unhappy as all the women in this series are, and so are [...]

    15. A Look Back.I’m a fan of The Desert Cities Mysteries, and adore the main character Jessica Huntington. This book takes us back to Jessica’s childhood; it’s a clever prequel to the series. Jessica is nine years old, listening to her beloved nanny Bernadette tell a story about a lost love. Bernadette also appears in the Desert Cities Mysteries. Although this is set during Jessica’s childhood, her adult voice is likewise a part of the novel. The title comes from a quote by Bernadette, “In [...]

    16. This novel by Anna Burke is a charming prequel to the Desert Cities Mysteries as we meet the character of Jessica Huntington in childhood; this book serves as a beautiful sort of origin story for Jessica as well as an illumination to her future character. We see her story through the sharing of love and heartbreak between the nine-year-old and her caregiver Bernadette, a woman just trying to navigate the trials of a passionate love for Guillermo and the complications surrounding joining a tradit [...]

    17. This is a charming, warm story of the love between the 2 main characters Bernadette & Guillermo. It's about not only love & trust, but also about gossip, jealousy, family dynamics both good & bad, and ultimately betrayal. I fell in love with both of the main characters. It was fun to watch Bernadette grow & be exposed to new ideas, to new technology, & to new land & cultures (America). One of my favorite quotes is: "one of those timeless moments that might have lasted for [...]

    18. Anna Burke's 'Love a Foot Above the Ground' was a wonderfully written read. Burke's characters felt very real, their emotions easy to empathize with and their motivations felt very human. The book's respect to other culture's and their customs was very well done. Descriptions of the locations were rich and vibrant giving readers the ability to place themselves there and experience the surroundings with the characters. The story also felt realistic, but with just a touch of that magic that sometim [...]

    19. This intriguing novel showcases Ms Burke’s talent as an author. The drama portrayed is rich and detailed. I loved the way the plot is narrated by such a young but deeply moving voice. Tragedy, heartache, happiness and joy are all blended beautiful in this well-crafted novel. There won’t be a person reading this who doesn’t empathize with Bernadette in some way. And what a great role model she is too. Her intelligence, warmth and humour shine through and are a delight to encounter via the p [...]

    20. Many reviewers consider this a love story. However, “love lifts us up, but it can’t always keep us soaring a foot above the ground.” This may sound a little crazy, como una cabra, but “all of the best stories start with once upon a time, so listen with your heart so you can hear the whole story.” This is a story of history, culture, education, faith, family, mystery, and love. Enjoy it from whatever reason you choose. But, remember to open yourself to the other parts of the story. Rem [...]

    21. LOVE A FOOT ABOVE THE GROUNDWARNING! YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED A BOX OF TISSUES WHILE READING THIS NOVELLA. THERE ARE MOMENTS OF EXTREME JOY AND SADNESS. I CHUCKLED, I CRIED AND I GOT ANGRY AT THE INJUSTICE DONE TO THE CHARACTERS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS STORY WHICH IS A PREQUEL TO THE JESSICA HUNTINGTON MYSTERIES. LOVE A FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND IS WORTHY OF FIVE STARS AS IT GIVES US A LOOK AT BERNADETTES YOUTH.

    22. “Life goes on, but love lasts forever, Querida. Hasta luego is not goodbye.”This small, slightly strange story is a "prequel" decades before A Dead Husband is set. It is a story of love, change, heartache, hope and redemption and how much one person can change many peoples' history. It will make you angry, it will make you cry, it will make you laugh, and it might drive you into your own histories to find that love that lasts forever.

    23. This is a well-written historical life-lesson about Bernedette, a young girl from a small fishing village in Mexico who falls in love with a rancher. Little does she know that the conflicts going on inside Guillermo’s family will affect her future. The story is rich with Mexican culture and an enjoyable romantic tale. I recommend this story and give it 5 stars.

    24. I love books that transport me to countries that I have never visited, in this case, Mexico for my virtual travel. It is also great to get an insight into real people's native culture. Aside from the joy of all that, it was also a story woven with romance, intrigue and colour. Yes it was sad, but it said it would be from the outset. A very enjoyable read.

    25. This was more of a history of Bernadette’s love and loss of Guillermo. She was so young to fall in love and get married but it was a true love of soul mates. It was joy when the meet and through the courtship and sadness at the loss of her love. Because of Guillermo and their marriage her family learned things they may never had considered and made better lives for themselves and their families by going to school and most moving to America. It shows how one persons actions effect more than jus [...]

    26. This is my all time favorite book ever. There is a rawness and pureness to this book that makes you believe in true love and that there is truly someone out there for you and you never know how or when you will find them. Bernadette is the kind of women that I wish I had in my life she is such a wonderful, kind and loving soul who lets you know how it is. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

    27. I really liked this book it was interesting and the storyline was good. This is a nice book for an afternoon when you have a hour to just relax and read. Anna Celeste hit a ball to the outfield when she wrote this book!
