1 thought on “Killjoys: The Seven Deadly Sins

    1. I needed this book. Short, well written, and very convicting. The chapters on Pride, Envy, and Anger were especially helpful for me. Read this book. It's short, but it will cut to the heart.

    2. This book was on point with descriptions of what are commonly referred to as the seven deadly sins. Each chapter is immersed with examples from scripture. It is a great collaborative work; each chapter written by a different person but produced by Desiring God (meaning the pdf is available for free on their website.)

    3. A collection of essays on the seven deadly sins. It's concise & very convicting. Each sin is presented in a unique light such that I approached thinking, "Oh this one doesn't really apply to me," and left thinking, "Lord forgive me." Great read.

    4. The chapters of greed, gluttony and especially lust, were my favourite. The application of how we can fight each sin at the end of each chapter were very helpful. Fine work by the Desiring God ministry.

    5. This is a short book every Christian should read devotionally. It addresses the subtle sins that sneak into our souls and so easily take hold of us. It unearthed several areas of unhealth in my own heart and I plan to revisit sections consistently to be reminded of the truth anchored in scripture that I need to hear again and again. Pipers final chapter on lust is pure gold, something every person, particularly every guy should read.

    6. Practical Weaponry Against SinJust read the sample, you will be hooked. I started the introduction and before long found myself halfway through the study. Well worth your time and money. Great expositions on the roots of our most deadly temptations and weaknesses. I will revisit the practical insights of each individual study again and again.

    7. Very simple, straightforward and applicable read regarding the historic 7 deadly sins and how the Scripture speaks of them. The reading was engaging and convicting. I would encourage anyone to read this.

    8. Sensacional! Killjoys é um livro que te desafia, para cada pecado e suas raízes há formas de combatê-los utilizando os frutos do espírito. São vários artigos escritos por ministros conhecidos, como John Piper. Vale a pena ler e reler. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    9. This is a quick but thorough examination of the seven deadly sins, their roots, and their fruits. It is easy to see how I will use this as a reference for ministry in the future.

    10. Short, concise, and full of much needed applicable truth, I loved this book! It's amazing, after reading the description of each deadly sin, how much counseling in the church revolves around fighting these sins. I think this book is extremely helpful for ministers looking to expand their resources for counseling others. My two favorite, if you can call them that, chapters were those on Sloth by Tony Reinke & Greed by David Mathis. The depth and complexity of these sins was eye opening. Also, [...]

    11. THE 7 DEADLY SINS: Overview of the book.Pride: We are all prideful to some extent, when our eyes are not looking up at Jesus they are looking down on someone else. Self-exultation is rampant in the world, leading to all manner of grievance.Envy: I often say it is one if not the most practiced sins in the world. It rules the political world, it wraps itself in equality and justice, and hardens the hearts of so many against their neighbor.Anger: Too much anger and aggression, fed by the forces of [...]

    12. I liked this book a lot. I was attracted to it because one of the great mysteries about God's creation that I often find most fascinating, and also most practical, is that He really has wired us with very specific longings. I personally liked The Seven Longings of the Human Heart a lot more, which addresses it from the angle of longing, and in more detail. But this is a short collection of essays that address it from the angle of sin, but with the same approach: that these sins are symptomatic o [...]

    13. ¿Un clavo saca otro clavo? The popular Spanish saying rings true. The seven rusty, venomous nails lodged deep into the heart of every warm-blooded man can only be expelled by the power of a new & greater presence: the white hot glory of God in Jesus Christ. We fight sin not by focusing on not doing the sin itself, but rather by cultivating a love for Jesus that satisfies the longings of the soul more than any sin could ever promise. “This is the key: conquering greed [or any sin] with the [...]

    14. How we need a serious, gospel-centered treatment of sin in the lives of Christians such as these seven writers' focused teaching! The book's introduction effectively summarizes its thesis that God "will satisfy you more than anyone or anything else" and purpose "to chart a path to greater holiness and greater joyOur love affairs with sin are not just a matter of morality, but of joy." So rather than being a legalistic treatise on dos and don'ts, the text grounds us in our relationship with Chris [...]

    15. At under 100 pages, this is a quick read, but meaty and packed with truth. After a brief introduction to the concept of "seven deadly sins," each chapter consists of a different writer defining the sin, examining the root of it, helping you see its heinousness, and outlining how to fight against it in a Gospel-focused way. I found five of the chapters to be extremely well done and applicable to my life; the other two weren't as strong. (That's not because those two weren't the sins I struggle wi [...]

    16. What a great books about sanctification since Future Grace! It's written with wisdom, precision and ultimately, love , when the lovers of good think about evil in order to fight it for God and his people. I would like to read it over and over again for my spiritual growth, but I will keep in mind, and I hope you too who read this review, to do this message in real life and teach them to other people, believers and probably unbelivers, as the psalmist said "Restore to me the joy of Your salvation [...]

    17. I recently listened to an NPR Ted Talks podcast in which they culled 7 speakers, each presenting on one of the 7 deadly sins: pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. Each one ended up saying these famous sins weren't that bad, or were misunderstood, or were even good things. This brief, well-written book, on the other hand, helps us see how deceitful and deadly each these sins are. Also a collection of different authors tackling each of the 7 sins, they give accurate descriptions o [...]

    18. This is one of the many free ebooks I got from desiringgod! :)Killjoys: The Seven Deadly Sins was written by seven different authors where each author discussed one deadly sin. One of the seven authors named Marshall Segal wrote the introduction wherein he cited the seven deadly sins as mistresses of a one man. Meaning, each of us have committed these sins and perhaps some are still under the slavery of specific deadly sins. Pride, Envy, Anger, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony and Lust. These are the seve [...]

    19. This was a great little book about the seven deadly sins and how to root yourself in the gospel in order to overcome them by the grace of God. Each author gives a short and biblical synopsis of the sin, ways to recognize them, and then how grow in the grace of Christ, and as John Owen said, "Be killing sin." This book is great for any Christian to read because we've all struggled with these and continue to struggle with them. I enjoyed hearing from many different authors as each one brought a pe [...]

    20. When a particular sin festers in my life (most recently envy) this explanation of the underlying causes, symptoms and antidotes toward sin is an excellent resource to turn to (after the Bible of course). I suggest reading a chapter at a time and really turning over the points made and their implications in your walk with Christ in your mind. It's really convicting and helps to sort out several amiss factors or several "hidden" sins we might struggle with and why we struggle with them.LOVED IT! ( [...]

    21. This is a book I will be returning to over and over again. It's something of a short spiritual diagnostic - a quick way to throw some light on your soul tendencies. A different writer authors each chapter, which is exciting. All are written well. Some are written exceptionally well. Piper's chapter on Lust is phenomenal. Treatments of Gluttony and Sloth were also excellent. I wish this book were longer. Another 100 pages of development, practical strategies and more exegesis of biblical texts wo [...]

    22. This concise book is a helpful guide for identifying sin in your life as a believer. The book begins by emphasizing the seriousness of sin and why it's helpful to use the categories of "Seven Deadly Sins" to attack sin at the root. Each chapter outlines one of the sins, shows how it distorts the glory of God and the joy of the believer, and then offers remedies to grow in sanctification in that particular area.

    23. This an excellent book on the so-called seven deadly sins. It's a collaboration where each chapter covers one of the sins and is written by a different author affiliated with Desiring God. The sins covered are pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. While there is overlap with these sins, the authors did a good job of keeping them distinct. This book is a fresh look at root sins prevalent among mankind from the fall. I high recommend it.

    24. Concise collection of thoughts on the seven deadly sins. Different authors sometimes bring overlapping (redundant) ideas to the book, but they're good ideas, so I didn't mind too much. Wonderful quotes and illustrations. Lots of scripture. And like all Desiring God resources, the reader is exhorted to treasure Christ above all earthly pleasures and flee the deceitful desires of sin.

    25. This is great book and gives a concise look at the seven deadly sins. I believe it can easier to read then most books like this. What I discovered while reading is struggle with all the sins instead of just one or two. Another great thing is you can get a pdf version for free at desiring God website. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to study the seven deadly sins.

    26. This is a book I think every believer should read , if possible. It is a quick read and each of the seven deadly sins is described well and the fight of faith to combat them clearly laid out. It will be food for thought for me for a long time as I try to discern how these deadly sins are manifested in my life in so many ways and so put them to death as I learn to love God more than my sins.

    27. Excellent. Gospel-rich. Deep theology that really makes a practical daily difference.Particularly appreciated the picture of the zombie under sloth and Pipers A.N.T.H.E.M. strategy for attacking lust.Helpful review and summary by Njeri Maina at conversationmagazine.wordpres

    28. Very helpful! This book will help the believer echo the Puritan John Owen concerning his statement about Romans 8:13,"Be killing sin or it will be killing you." Practical and insightful wisdom on how to replace the inferior pleasure of sin with the superior pleasure of Jesus.

    29. Solid read; 5 stars for even just the chapters on sloth and lust. Very helpful book in understanding our sinful nature and the power of the gospel to kill the sin that is out to kill our joy. Highly recommend.
