    1. A devoted and vocal vegetarian, Singer included the themes of vegetarianism and animal suffering in many of his stories, included several listed in this volume, such as The Slaughterer, a powerful and harrowing story about the anguish that an appointed ritual slaughterer has trying to reconcile his compassion for animals with his job of slaughtering animals. I read it on my podcast as part of my series that features stories about our relationship to and our mistreatment of non-human animals. Sin [...]

    2. Isaac Bashevis Singer was the first Yiddish writer won Nobel prize in 1978. His writings come from a different cultural milieu, such as most of the stories are set in the Jewish life of Poland. I first encountered his magnificent "Spinoza on Market Street", and now I can dive into his world. Why? Because that is the world imbue with Old Testaments, Talmud, Kabbalah, Rabbis, Scholars against the large sea of living of marriages, death and birth, eccentricities, the mundane living cheek-and-jowl wi [...]

    3. Singer Collected Stories: V. 1 (Library of America, 149) (Vol.1) Gimpel the Fool to The Letter Writer, by Isaac Bashevis Singer, is quite the unique, intense and extraordinary collection of short stories whose foundations are straight from the shtetl in Poland.Singer is an incredible writer of the mystical and supernatural tale, and an extremely inventive writer, creating scenarios that often verge on the border of outrageous, that left me shaking my head at times at the absurdity of it all. Yet [...]

    4. I am reading this now. I still have a 100 pages to go, it's almost 800 pages long. This has been mind-blowing for me. His stories are so fresh, so vivid, so touching. Poland and Wales have the best story tellers in the Western World. Some of my ancestors are Bohemian and even though his one mention of Bohemia is disparaging, I feel connected to all he has written here and it's like opening a portal to the past. FYI, the stories were written in Yiddish and translated by various people. Singer, wh [...]

    5. I picked this up for the title story which I had heard mentioned somewhere and thought it sounded interesting. It is very much a Yiddish story, centering around a gullible character who is taken advantage of all his life. It was sad, especially the Pharisaical Judaism the character lives in.

    6. I checked out this book for Yentl The Yeshiva Boy but I am sure I will return to finish the compilation. Singer writes with an alluring magnetism that can draw in any reader.
