    1. Ludwig Bemelmans' trip to Europe with his daughter Barbara and her small doggie. The relationship between Dad and daughter is very interesting and quite sophisticated. There is very little commentary on the mother, whoever that maybe - and it seems daughter and father travel quite a lot. She's 12 or 13, but seems much wiser than her natural age - and he treats her more as a best friend than a child-owner. I imagine that this book is a collection of travel sketches (drawings and text) for Holiday [...]

    2. This is a delightful period travelogue. Even more interestingly, he has a way of thinking about his daughter, Barbara, that is intellectually appreciative of her as a person, not a child (which she is, at the time). Now, I'm curious to know how a child parented in this way is as an adult today.

    3. A delight - Calvin Trillin covered the same ground a generation after, traveling through Europe with his teenage daughters.

    4. travels in Europe with a young daughter and her dog. Sweet, comic and droll, by same author as the "Madeline" series.
