    1. An entertaining YA that suffers from standard Atwoodian worldbuilding: Lady Angela is about to be married off, not only for her considerable dowry, but because she somehow knows where "the Book of Forbidden Wisdom" is. The wedding is interrupted, and she is rescued by her childhood friend, Trey. She and Trey and her sister flee, chased by the baddies. Touching any man automatically makes them harlots and stained. They flee to the north, where the treatment of women is even worse. The best part wa [...]

    2. This book was readable for me but it was annoying most of the time. This seemed to be a book written to try to capture the old feel of chivalric tales with some female agency layered heavily on top. The main character Angel and most of the people with her grew up in a society where social mores are like Victorian ideals or strict religious chastity laws cranked into overdrive; very specific rules about everything to do with interactions between men and women, bodily functions, etc. At least half [...]

    3. I enjoyed this but, boy, it should have been called the BOOK OF FORBIDDEN LOGIC.To avoid spoilers, I'll put two which occur early enough on: Silky manages to bite someone hard even though she is gagged at the time. This other-world which is not Christian, has names like Angel and St. Clare. Was the editor drunk when s/he was working on this? When we get to the book itself, it really falls apart, but that would be spoilery.

    4. I absolutely loved this book, a beautifully crafted, lyrical tale of adventure, heroism, and love. Set in a time and place where land, the means to power and wealth, is passed through the female line but controlled by men, women are valuable as vehicles for trade and constrained within elaborate rituals and taboos. The story follows two young noblewomen, Lady Angel and her sister Sillky, who flee the violence and restriction of their home to weather the dangers of a neighboring land. In the proc [...]

    5. Note: I'm a touch biased, as I was the editor on this book.I like to let readers know why I decided to publish a certain book, and with Gillian's, it was because I felt she was doing something fresh in the fantasy genre. We've seen the rise of dark fantasy over the last decade or so, and while I absolutely love most of that, it can also get a bit wearing. Sometimes you just want your heroine to be a heroine--to be strong and good and not be in some conflicted gray area. And while Angel certainly [...]

    6. Wandering plot with modern version of paper doll characters: PC, fem-warriors, and innocuous. I didn't find this a great read. It gets two stars because this writer can use language well, but the tour through more than one not-Arabic scenarios is a snooze.
