    1. This collection of "emerging writers" profoundly lacks any writers outside of academia, yet the introduction boasts of giving voice and recognition to writers on the outside looking in; however, upon reading the 50 writers' bios, every contributing writer holds a MFA degree, particularly from prestigious universities, along with the vast majority holding teaching jobs at various 4-year universities across the country. I guess I just don't see the diversity of voice in such credentials.

The back not only offers nothing, it actually makes me not want to pick up the book, since the two quotes it provides are referencing another book or coming from the guest editor herself: that lacks confidence, couldn't they have sent this off to Kirkus sometime before it was slapped with an ISBN? Also, it is never explained who Tracy K. Smith is or why I should listen to her. Her introduction felt weak.So I don't know anything about p [...]

    4. Why do I keep buying these books? (To see what modern poets write.) Poems like these make no sense and reek of pretension.
