    1. This is one of those novels that seems so real that you can't believe it did not happen--which in a way it did. I don't want to spoil your pleasure in reading this intriguing novel, except to say that it is one of the most cunning pieces of writing I've come across. It combines a scholarly sensibility with romantic passion. Indeed, some reviewers have simply taken the novel's sources at face value. The novel is getting rave reviews in England, but this is a novel American readers can easily iden [...]

    2. A terrific and amusing story about ghosts and mediums told by a ghost. Kitty King is brought into being at a seance in America in the lat 1700's. Over the course of the next two centuries Kitty travels the globe working with mediums some who are gifted and some who are not. She tells of her love for Alan even long after he dies and the charlatans she's met and not been afraid to shaft.Wonderfully witty and sad in places this was a great read.

    4. This book is the stuff of history-loving. It's the imagining of how certain circumstances are linked. How could this man, who said such rational things in this year become mad a few decades later? Why did he marry that awful woman? The dots are all connected by Lorna Gibb, to the point where it doesn't matter anymore if the dots are actually real or not, just that she did connect them and doesn't try to make the lines flow, hiding them, it's refreshing.Beside the main story line, the story of th [...]

    5. I got this for Christmas, and I really wanted to be into it; abandoning a book you've been given as a gift feels particularly callous somehow. (The paperback cover is really beautiful, too.) I may well put this away somewhere and have another go at it later on.

    6. This book is a multilevel commentary on the human condition told from an outsiders perspective.I think, therefore I am but when I'm gone whom will remember me and was I here at all? The great purpose of life is explored through the personality of the 'ghost.'
