    1. I'm admittedly not an avid poetry reader, but I love Nikki Giovanni, so when I found this 1978 hard cover copy in a now defunct secondhand bookstore in Havre de Grace, Maryland, I had to pick it up. I'm still working through this book as I don't read poetry books in order, rather I pick them up and turn to a page and read what inspires me. In this case the book title spoke to me, evoking the fragility of our very existence, "cotton candy on a rainy day." Of the poems I've read in this book, they [...]

    2. "my poems get decimated/in the dishes the laundry/my sister is having another crisis/the bed has to be made/there is a blizzard on the way go to the grocery store/did you go to the cleaners/then a fuse blows/a fuse always has to blow/the women soon find themselves talking either to babies or about them/no matter how careful we are/we end up giving tips/on the latest new improved cleaner/and the lotion that will take the smell away""Emotional falls always are/ the worst/and there are no crutches [...]

    3. This book was really good but it wasn't my favorite poetry book that I have read. The thing that I liked about it was that it was true feelings she had and it was all truth. What made me not like it as much was the fact that some of the poems were a little long and I sorta got tired of them fast. Although I gave it three stars for the fact that the sentences and pages were structured well together and the writing was really good, I just would have wanted more excitement and action in the poems.

    4. 4.5 starsThis poetry collection reminded me why I love women so much. Nikki Giovanni’s poetry style is cut and dry, poetic but to the point. It’s easy to read and understand but it’s still so relatable and it still hits you in the chest. My favorite poems were Fascinations, Woman, Poem (for Ema), Patience, You Are There, and A Poem of Friendship. I strongly suggest this collection!!!

    5. I love Nikki Giovanni's poetry. She can slice and dice the world, turn on a dime, and become playful, raise the roof up to the sky, and dig down deep to what we turn away from. Brilliant, striking, illuminating, she has it all. One of my favorite quotes from this collection: "i write becausei have to"~ "Boxes"

    6. incredible. one of the best collections I’ve read in a long time & I’m so mad at myself for not finding Giovanni sooner. I wish I could sing better praises in a mere review.

    7. This book, published in 1978, was a turning in Nikki Giovanni's poetry from the more political to the more personal, leaning toward the confessional. If it could be said she was was a truth teller in her earlier books, here she sometimes slips into the advice giver (or affirmer of bromides), thankfully not of the syrupy sort but the tendency results in some weak poetry. She dips into the maudlin at times but only briefly. She has a hard edge and her truth-telling extends to herself. From "Intros [...]

    8. COTTON CANDY ON A RAINY DAY WAS ABOUT POETRY. NIKKI GIOVANNI WAS THE AUTHOR OF THE POETS, SHE WAS AN EXCELLENT POET THAT HAS A GREAT INSPIRATION ON A READERS LIFE BY WORDS. THE POEMS I HAVE READ SEEMS SO REALISTIC, THE WAY SHE GIVES DETAILS IT SEEMS LIKE SHE HAS EXPERIENCED THOSE CHALLENGES OR SHE HAS BEEN SURROUNDED BY THEM. NIKKI GIOVANNI IS A GREAT POET BECAUSE SHE DOES NOT JUST WRITE TO WRITE SHE PUTS MEANING AND FEELING INTO HER POEMS THAT WOULD WANT SOMEONE TO CONTINUE READING HER POETRYE [...]

    9. To read again and again. All of my awkward years silenced and still alive in these words. I can still remember painting cotton balls shaped like cotton candy tear drops for the cover of my assigned book report and thinking how well I understood the world in her eyes at 15. Reading it again brings me pain and joy that only living life can bring, the words of a woman that has really lived and loved and shared.

    10. This book of poetry got me through high school. Somehow, diving into her poems kept whatever pain I found in my life then, at bay. She gave me a map for survival. She taught me how to have flaws. I love Nikki.

    11. Giovanni has always been a plus one minus one poet for me. Some stanzas are so topical that I have difficulty relating and some are so artful that I wish I have written them myself. This collection is no exception. "I've not even learned/ how to say I like you/ without frightening people/ away"

    12. Purchased for me on a whim by a man I dated, Jared, this book if poetry has always been my favorite.Very down to earth, slightly hip in a 70's kind of way. Out of all of her books of poems this has always remained my favorite.

    13. I cannot say enough about this beloved author. She carried my through my youth and young adulthood and helped form in me a love of words and expression and language like no other author has done. A true inspiration.

    14. This is the first poetry book I read for pleasure, at the suggestion of a librarian. It's probably fair to mention I previously cultivated a severe dislike for poetry, but Nikki Giovanni has converted me. What beauty and relatability lies in her work!

    15. This was the FIRST poetry book I ever read of Nikki Giovanni's (and probably ever since I was only 7). Loved it then, and love it now!

    16. My favorite book from my favorite poet. Introspection is just the most cynical and personal poems I've ever read.

    17. This is one of my favorite books of poetry. I feel like her voice is my life at times. Such raw emotion in simple words.
