    1. ventured, nothing gained. (45)The deeply-felt desire for spontaneity. The plague of inhibition. Be natural; be reserved. Be demonstrative; be discreet. An excess of vulnerability could turn you into the protagonist of an unpleasant anecdote. Speak but not too much. Write but do not expose too much. Be honest but do not reveal too much. Nothing seems already too much.Be at ease; control yourself. Because,'What will people say? Where will it end? What will tomorrow bring, tomorrow, tomorrow!' (35) [...]

    2. Dostoyevsky was deeply interested in future of humanity, and there are times such as in Brirgees Karmanzov and Dream of a Ridiculous Man, when he advocates that it is only living each other, humanity can save itself. At other times such as in The Idiot, Notes from the Underground and in here, he brings out the problems with this idea. The protogonist of this story tries to bring this idea to reality, although with secret selfish motives, by being kind to those less fortune, his first and only su [...]

    6. Frequenting my pondering on the concept of organic and inorganic feelings, exclusively guilt and shame- which is which? In this short story a man of high rank and aristocracy shows up uninvited to one of his subordinates' wedding, surely with a certain aim in mind, yet after a couple of drinks things do not go as initially planned; the man ends up sick and is left a burden in the care of the newly wedded couple (whom have no money btw) inevitably ruining the whole night. Yet as he awakes, he is [...]

    8. This long short story is variously called A Nasty Anecdote, A Nasty Story, or in the Constance Garnett translation I read, An Unpleasant Predicament. Fyodor Dostoyevsky -- even in his lesser works -- is always fascinating. An Unpleasant Predicament is the tale of a young Civil Service General named Pralinsky, whose carriage takes off and leaves him at a superior's house. He decides to walk until he can find a cab, but he is a bit drunk. By chance, he comes upon a wedding party of one of his subo [...]

    9. I just can't stop laughing. One of my favorite of all times. I can read this story over and over again. Cheers to you Ivan Il'ich!

    10. A very well-realised look at the great gap between self-perception and social reality, classes, and ultimately what one thinks about themselves and what others actually think of them.Dostoyevsky portrays his protagonist and his exploits in such excruciating deal that it’s both infuriating and invites the reader to cringe often. The story just escalates, and escalates, and escalates, and what starts as a sort of detached amusement at the protagonist turns into rage and disgust as his ridiculous [...]

Drummond fecha a primeira [...]

    14. The desire for engagement and to be loved crashes into drunken vomit and humiliation. Reminds me of visitors to rural Africa forcing the poor family to kill the chicken they have to host an unwanted or solicited guest.

    17. The point of this story is to show how philosophical principles by themselves are quite impotent. Dostoevsky does this very subtly by vivisecting the protagonist (Ivan Ilyich). He reveals the inner workings of the mind very skillfully and makes this, a rather extraordinary episode, very understandable. Surprisingly, the apparently heavy premise of our hero's exploits dissolves into moments of genuine hilarity. Maybe you will not only able to understand Ivan Ilyich's actions, but also empathize w [...]

    18. Short story about a civil servant ~ Ivan Ilyich Pralinsky, gate crashing a wedding party of a guy that works for him, to try to make a point of philosophy that consists of having kindness to those in lower status social positions. It was written pretty early in Dostoyevsky's career, before he really started to get good and write masterpiece after masterpiece. It's a pretty simple story, nothing overly special, but the writing and direction is effective in showing how situations quite often never [...]

    19. A grotesque novella which justifies the Croatian translation of the title ("Svinjarija" [Pig bussines]). A rare Dostoevsky's primarily comedic work. Not as good as The Village of Stepanchikovo, but, on the other hand, it isn't a flop like "The Double". The end leaves readers kind of hanging- it could've been more round up (what happened when the grumpy old man got up?). Obviously, I'm not really into open endings. Has some hilarious parts/ideas though.

    20. A general shows up univited at a simple man's wedding with the hope to show off. But things don't go as he thought.

    21. Nuk eshte dehja ajo qe tall Dostojevski ne kete veper, por karakteri i dobet i te pasurve. Nje satire e vertete qe ve ne loje ata qe duan te behen "te mire" , por qe sduan te heqin dore nga ato qe kane patur me parpara. Kontroverse kjo , apo jo?Groteske

    23. Dostoyevsky channels his inner Gogol in this short story about a man who has a drink too many, and ends up with one of the nastiest hangovers in literary history.

    24. I will always love Dostoyevsky's books, even though they tend to be a bit depressing. I'm glad that he also wrote a hilarious story like this one.
