    1. Thank you to Edelweiss+ for an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own. It's not often that I want to stop mid-read, and learn about the inspiration behind an author's book. Rarely do I ask myself "what if" when I read something that reminds me of historical battles about which I've been taught. And I cannott remember the last time I read a middle grade book that inspired me to think about resistance, rebellion, and political power dynamics. But R IS FOR REBEL did all of this for me, and more. [...]

    2. Special thanks to J. Anderson Coats for providing our #bookexcursion group with an ARC of R is for Rebel. Look for its release in February 2018.Three generations before Malley was born, the country of Milea was conquered by the New Wealds. After her parents were imprisoned for being resisters to the new government, Malley was sent to a national school. The school’s mission is to reform Malley and other young girls to be loyal Wealdan subjects and train them for domestic service. From the very [...]

    3. When the Wealdan Empire conquered Milea, the emperor and his men began breaking down every Milean tradition. No songs. No hedge schools. No families. All children must attend a national school, in accordance with the Education Act. After Malley's parents are shipped to a penal colony, she is captured and sent to a national school, where she must wear her hair unbound, take a Wealdan name and suffer being treated like a slave. But Malley is songworthy, and she will resist these tyrants. She will [...]

    4. i'm not entirely sure how i feel about this one. it had a strong plot, but it didn't feel like the writing was able to accomplish all that was set up. i like the idea: ungovernable girls rising against their oppressors, but something about it was off. it could be because it's written for a younger audienence; the book has glaring moments of cruelty and darkness and evil, but it still feels just outside of reality. which, you know, isn't a problem considering that this book IS fiction. but noneth [...]

    5. So different from all the other middle grade novels out there right now, in a good way! I think this story will stay with me for a long time (maybe I'm more Milean than I realized).

    6. Really enjoyed this story. This is a book that made me think about my own values and our own world's history. Reccomend it to everyone who is in the mood for some brave, kickass girls.

    7. I really enjoyed this book and am thankful that I have not had experiences that are even partly similar to Malley. I can't imagine having to try to be even half as brave as she did. Good book.

    8. E ARC from Edelweiss Plus. Definitely a fantasy book and not historical fiction, which caught me off guard a bit.

    9. R is for Rebel was a truly inspiring and uplifting book. I could not put it down. The story of these girls whose families were taken in some way from them and their will to survive and overcome was amazing. The tale of the Milean girls and their rebellion is one that all children should read. J. Anderson Coats has done an amazing job with this book.
