    1. Although I think the total opposite of a large extent of Arjomand's claims, I still think this book offers a challenging and eye-opening reading experience. Arjomand has an explanatory writing style and obviously he wants the reader to understand the broader framework of transformation of Shiism throughout centuries but it is not a typical, chronological history book for the uninformed starters.     2. This was dense but definitely worth the effort. Arjomand stays on track theoretically but also offers a helpful overview of Iranian history along the way. Sometimes he makes apparent value judgments in a way that I found jarring, and it's not really clear what his perspective is (other than being REALLY into Max Weber). But in the end I found his conclusions to be compelling.I do feel like the use of jargon in this book is a bit extreme; I would have had a hard time understanding it ten years ag [...]
