    1. I recently picked up Cavallaro's Anime and Memory under the impression it would adopt a more critical approach than her book on Miyazaki, which is essentially an overview of his oeuvre. But the author managed to raise my eyebrows when, in establishing the framework for her analysis, she began by deferring to an encyclopedia entry on traditional Japanese aesthetics as opposed to more substantial scholarship.
