    1. Exquisite fantastical fiction (not fantasy!) peppered with poetic lines and metaphors and magic that is sometimes real or imagined by the characters. The book has a couple of flaws in the early chapters that could use some editing, but once it hits full stride it is a gripping flight and deserves 4.5 to 5 stars. If you read only the first few chapters it might be a 3 star or lower book, so don't be discouraged with just the first few chapters -- keep reading and the glimpses of good writing will [...]

    2. This account of Maui's adventures is very well written and researched. It's told in a style reminiscent of native folk tales. Unfortunately, I had difficulty in really getting involved with the characters. Otherwise, a great book.
