1 thought on “Royko in Love: Mike's Letters to Carol

    1. While I enjoyed this book at first, it started to drag throughout the second half -- but not at the fault of the writer. The trouble is, it's hard to appreciate love letters if they're not for you. And when there are 114 of them, expressing the same sentiment in word after word after word, they start to blend together. For me, I feel like I've never wanted something to end more quickly. But for Carol, to whom the letters were addressed? I can only imagine her elation at being wooed by her own Cyra [...]

    2. I gave it three stars because it is so repetitive. However, since it is a memoir that is probably unfair. I realy liked and like Mike Royko and I feel bad that there love story was interrupted very early because of her death.

    3. I read and enjoyed Royko's columns and even a couple of his books, so was interested to read about his personal life, especially since this was in regard to his first wife.Maybe because I was interested in Royko to begin with I found myself anxious to read each letter. The collection definitely held my attention. While I certainly felt from reading them that Royko was indeed madly in love with Carol, it was hard to ignore the traces of controling behavior threading through the letters and the co [...]

    4. This book is a compilation of the love letters Mike Royko wrote to the woman who became his wife. He was completely love-struck, and while there are some instances of literary references and keen observation, most of the narrative consists of how much he loves Carol, how much he misses her, and how he arranges his life in Blaine, WA around writing, mailing and reading letters. It gets a bit tedious. The introduction to the third section (letters written after they marry) is bittersweet. The best [...]

    5. I enjoyed the first half of this book much more than the second. To begin with, Mike was wooing Carol with words; he was unsure of himself and his letters were touching and heartfelt. After Carol agreed to marry him, the tone of the letters changed quite markedly and he came over as much more controlling, more complaining and, frankly, much less likeable. It's a shame that the editors didn't stick to a shorter book with only half of the letters as an example of the power of words. The second hal [...]

    6. Instead of publishing every letter, author should have edited letters. While it is interesting to see this personal side of Mike Royko, letters are not literary or memorable. Book drags though I read to the end.

    7. The letters in this book are fun to read, but they weren't curated in a thoughful manner, so it feels a bit like you're reading the same thing over and over again. I got a little over halfway through before I gave up on this one. Romantic, yes, but not an objectively good book.

    8. too much cheese for me. maybe i am just not in the mood for the gushing love notes, but this was weird to read for me. almost too personal.

    9. OMGI get it, Mikeyou lurve Carol! While I could not finish this book, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it.cially to Chicagoans of a certain age and to those who are curious about dating during pre-internet/FaceTime/Skype wartime. 100+ letters in one year. That's how many missives it takes to woo your childhood sweetheart and to convince her to marry you. Some references will throw you into the wayback machine; some will make you laugh and some will offend. That's the kind of journalist Mike [...]
