    1. My wife, who is Japanese, claims that Sazae-San is hysterical. Usually it causes me to have a huge question mark over my head. But I can't think of another book that covers the post-war years in Japan so clearly and direct. Sazae-San is a cartoon character who lives with her family and she has to deal with the everyday life of that 'typical' family. It is actually a brilliant cartoon strip. It doesn't make me laugh (it's over my head due to the customs, etc.) but the incredible insight of life i [...]

    2. Sazae-san and her family are to Japan what Charlie Brown and Snoopy are to Americans: they're someone we all know. Their antics and personalities have become a part of the cultural landscape. And, like Peanuts, the Sazae-san comic strips are written with a gentle good humor that is not afraid to show the funny side of even the most embarrassing situations. For anyone with an interest in Japan, especially in the social chaos that was life in Tokyo after the war, these comics are a must read. The K [...]

    3. This is a sharp, relatable and endearing comic about family life during WWII written by a woman, who provides her own perspective. Sazae-san is a WWII era Japanese Liz Lemon (klutzy, sometimes awkward, but lovable) who leaves her parents house and goes on to make her own home with her husband and active child. The comics are so great because this edition offers footnotes that explain particularly Japanese references and makes it accessible to all. A light, easy read for anyone who wants to learn [...]

    4. The Wonderful World of Sazae-san shows the life of Sazae, the eldest daughter of the Isono family, in post-World War II times in Japan. This slice-of-life manga is very comical despite the glimpses of Japan's defeat (rationing, horse droppings collections, cholera scares, public bathhouses, pre-TV entertainment). I love that Sazae is an ordinary woman with a strong sense of justice and wit. This manga is suitable for men, women, and children of all ages. It's also a good introduction into Japane [...]

    5. Cute, light reading that educates you about post-war era life in Japan without you even realizing you're learning anything. :) Some of the strips are really funny, some I just stare at and can't for the life of me figure out what just happened and why it's funny, some are repeated in different variations (the boy acting like a dog) like a long-running joke with devoted readers. You never know what you're gonna get and I like it. It was a perfect little read while I was basking in the sun on my b [...]

    6. Cute enough manga, but not that funny. Although being that I had heard about this from my kids, I expected something a little better. But I guess they told me about it because it's classic manga. So the idea that this is one of the first manga by a woman way back in like the 40's, well that's kind of cool.

    7. These strips are just funny, they have the humor of a past perhaps too remote and give an insight into life in Japan just after the end of World War II. Really good.Queste strisce sono proprio carine, hanno la comicitá di un passato forse anche troppo remoto e danno uno spaccato della vita nel Giappone appena dopo la fine della seconda guerra mondiale. Godibilissime.

    8. I don't know how to rate this, so I won't. The hijinks of a girl on the cusp of womanhood in the years immediately following the Japanese surrender. Sometimes the humor flies true across the miles and years, especially when Sazea is caught between child and adult or the family finds itself horribly embarrassed by some trivial impropriety.
